I have a secret to tell you. Please keep it between us and everyone else.

The secret is hemp powder. Of greater importance than the secret itself is the information gleaned from the understanding of your body that the secret provides.

**Disclaime**r: I am NOT financed in any way by anyone purchasing hemp powder from any source. I do NOT have political-ideological-cultic reasons to encourage anyone to consume hemp powder. There are NO friends or loved ones being held hostage in a mysterious warehouse off Bentley Avenue by agents of the hemp-industrial complex and threatened with harm if I don’t distribute this information in this particular fashion. I AM here acting as a guide-stone for your understanding of your own body.

Hemp powder is a complete protein source, packed with fiber, and containing a multitude of nutrients. It is a vegan protein shake and meal supplement in one. It is a significant component of my weight, health and wellness management.

I first encountered hemp powder in a Men’s Health Magazine while studying Biology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. What attracted me to hemp was the satiety experienced by consuming it. What I discovered is a relatively inexpensive and rich nutritional source that regulates my sugars and reduces food cravings.

Let me give you some background so I can show you.

**The Glycemic Index**

The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of the speed at which your blood glucose rises in response to ingestion of a particular quantity of food. The higher the GI the more sharply your blood glucose will rise after ingestion. The glycemic load (GL) is related to the GI, and takes into account if you have an empty stomach, the quantity of food, your own personal digestion, etc. Pure glucose has a GI of 100\. Table sugar a GI of 65\. Hemp powder a GI of 4 and a negligible GL!

**Insulin**

Your body uses the glucose circulating in the blood to power the performance of your brain and body functions. However, when your blood glucose rises past a threshold your body releases insulin, a hormone which signals to your cells to uptake the circulating glucose and convert it into stored calories. Too much glucose at one time (high GL) and your insulin spikes, which drops your blood glucose sharply. Now you have entered a state where you have less access to circulating glucose (less performance) and (more on this below) a lower metabolism and the presence of hunger signals. You are also storing calories, most likely as fat.

**Calories, Metabolism, Starvation**

A significant component of regulating your body composition is calorie management. Your body fat percentage is closely related to your net calories gained/lost over time. The primary method for burning calories is through metabolism, the rest/digest/growth/repair process your body goes through daily.

If your blood glucose decreases, your metabolism subsequently decreases, depriving you of an ally in your calorie management. Once the glucose is low, the insulin (which also signals satiety) goes down too. Now we are in the realm of 'starvation'; performance and metabolism are down and food cravings (especially of extremely palatable and high-glycemic foods) rise. Many enter into this state unwittingly, and are faced with periods of low metabolism and food cravings. Unless you desire to practice discipline with your food choices during this time I advise you avoid this state.

**Note**: Though exercise and lean mass have a significant effect on your metabolism and body composition, I will not be discussing those factors until a future article. Exercise, specifically strength training, are critical to my body composition. If you desire to learn more about exercise at this time, especially strength training, I respond to DMs.

**Ghrelin, Satiety, and the Power of ‘No’**

When your stomach is carrying out digestion Ghrelin, a satiety hormone, is released. Similar to the satiety experienced when one has insulin circulating in response

When one feels sated they don’t have to put as much energy into managing food cravings. I have a serious sweet tooth, and have historically had difficulty saying ‘no’ to things like cinnamon buns, Snickers Bars, cheesecake, etc. My ‘no’ becomes more full-hearted and aligned in the presence of satiety signals. Yours will too.

Hemp powder

**Bringing this all Together**

I use hemp powder after a meal or a snack, or if I won’t be eating for a few hours.

What this does is ensure that I can keep my meal or snack reasonably-sized without feeling like I need more. And ensures that my blood sugar (and thus metabolism/performance) remains constant, nourishment and hydration are capped, and satiety signals remain strong throughout the day. I can keep my calories low, my metabolism high, and my mental and physical performance (my energy) at a steady peak.

That is my secret.

**BONUS: My Shake Recipe and the Hydration Factor**

My recipe is as follows:

\-6 parts hemp;
\-1 part spirulina;
\-1 part cacao;
\-1 part wheat grass; and
\-1 part ground flax seed.

This composition does not dissolve well in water, which means that I become really hydrated when I consume it. A bonus to an already nourishing and satiety-inducing mixture. The non-hemp components each have a reason for their inclusion which, to save the reader attention, I will not go into at this time.

I encourage you to look up all the variety of ways to consume hemp powder to reap it’s benefits and enhance the taste.

For myself I consume 30g of this mixture 3 - 6 times per day.

**In Closing**

What I am asking you, dear reader, to pay attention to at this time is the link between body composition, circulating glucose levels, metabolism, and satiety. I am not pushing you to adopt my process, even if you may significantly benefit from it. What I ask you to do is learn from it. As my grandfather used to say: “If you listen to me. You do what you want.”

Thank you.

Be healthy. Be Well.
